Although the exhibition has now closed, it is worth marking its significance. Alien Queen / Paraíso Extraño stands out as one of the most compelling exhibitions of the 2025/26 season.
I have long been drawn to Manuela Solano’s work, particularly for the way her paintings—marked by deliberately rough, coarse forms—function less as representations than as conduits for memory. The images recall fragments of visual culture—specific scenes from films, incidental celebrity photographs, peripheral cinematic stills—not necessarily iconic moments, but ones that linger in personal memory. They appear displaced, filtered through time, and reshaped by recollection.
Rather than offering immediate recognition, the works prompt a process of searching. These are not dormant emotions resurfacing, but images that had been there all along, without one fully realizing how much meaning they still carried. Memory arrives unexpectedly, almost involuntarily, bringing with it an emotional charge that feels disproportionate to the image itself. In this sense, remembering becomes a fundamentally primal act—one that precedes conscious interpretation.
This dynamic takes on added complexity when considering that Solano lost her sight at the age of twenty-six. Knowing this shifts the experience of the work: painting is no longer anchored in what is seen, but in how images are reconstructed once vision is no longer available. From this position, the work does more than activate the artist’s memory; it invites the viewer to imagine their own. How would our visual memories take shape if we were forced to reconstruct them without sight?
It is perhaps here that the precision of Solano’s paintings resides—not in visual accuracy, but in their ability to locate themselves at the fragile moment where memory begins to re-form.

✨ Uno de mis grandes highlights del año fue la invitación de Illya Haro [ @illyaharo ], desde la Secretaría de Cultura de Tijuana (@cultura.tj), para impartir una conferencia en la que, a través de datos y cifras, pude mostrar de forma clara y directa el impacto del arte en la economía de un sector, su papel en la construcción del tejido social, y su influencia en el índice de confianza para la inversión extranjera directa, y cómo esto se refleja de manera positiva en el desarrollo y bienestar de distintos sectores.
Una experiencia súper interesante y profundamente enriquecedora. Ojalá me inviten el próximo año a darla en algún otro lugar! 😉 🎨📊🤍
